I'm a bit on the struggle bus this morning, as I did not sleep well! Our bedroom was too warm, which feels like a strange complaint in March, but is true. Not a fan of the overly warm start to spring.
I had to book three work trips yesterday, and I was hoping to avoid two of them, but here we are. One to southern California (no big deal), one to London & one to Tokyo. All of them involve weekend traveling, which is so difficult, particularly because you miss a full weekend when you leave, & then you arrive back the following weekend so jetlagged that you don't get a weekend on the other end. Oh well. It's one of the responsibilities of my current job.
I will be ready to be done when I hit my milestones for this role. They are mostly financial, but also time bound, as I receive several incentives at various points. One is in July (definitely staying for that, as it's the year mark) & the next one is at the end of the year. When I signed up for this job, I was optimistic to make it three years (July, 2028). Barring something happening, I think July 2027 is the absolute most optimistic timeline, but January 2027 is the most realistic. We shall see. Watch this space. :-)
On a related note, I'm in the phase of doing a lot of financial planning, both short to mid term & of course, retirement planning. Going really deep into this makes me feel more secure & able to tackle decisions that lay ahead, as M & I get older & plan for the future. I don't know that I'm ready to "retire" when I quit this job, but I'm definitely ready to take some time, and then do something much more "casual" & not a "big career job". I really miss the flexibility I had last year before I went back to work.
What am I up to today? It feels like a very "health & fitness" minded day, for sure!
- Yoga class
- There's a bit of a gap while I wait for another class, so I will do some lifting & cardio
- Pilates class
- Getting a deep tissue myofascial release massage
- I need to sort out Nick's cell phone activation, get all of his laundry washed, & figure out if he's checking a bag for tomorrow
- Sounds like some folks are coming over to swim, so I will likely make food for that
- Menu plan
- Pack for Las Vegas/Zion trip
- Figure out schedule for next week + workouts for the week
- Finish reading a Kindle book, as my subscription ends tomorrow!
I wish you all the good vibes as you work on your current job retirement and post current job retirement plans! And if your S Cal office works brings you anywhere close to that Marriott with the red tile roof by the beach here in OC, feel free to let me know!
ReplyDeleteOver here today will be a 4 mile run/walk along beach and back, a matinee theater play, then Happy Hour after at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants.

I don't think I will be in that area, unfortunately! Otherwise, would love to meet up.
DeleteYour day sounds absolutely fabulous - hope it was great. - HP
Your travel schedule sounds brutal and hard to maintain. You're wise to think about milestones and timeliness for your next change. I wonder if through your skills that might be much needed elsewhere, a non-profit job that paid enough income for living expenses and health insurance might be a rewarding bridge? Usually mission based organizations don't pay great, but can provide an understood work life balance, if ( don't use me as example) boundaries are established.
ReplyDeleteI've definitely been thinking of non-profits as a post "career" job next step. I want quite a bit of schedule flexibility for traveling, so maybe even something part-time. - HP
DeleteHope you meet all your goals for today, as well as the future.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anne! and, likewise to you. :-) - HP
DeleteI hope that once I start planning retirement in earnest, the clouds will part and I will have a better idea of things. One can hope! Speaking of that, I am at work, as usual for me, and catching up on blog posts. Its been like summer here - what happened to spring?! I have to have it cooler to sleep really well.
ReplyDeleteHa, right? Sometimes it does feel a bit like fortune telling, despite all of the best efforts. - HP
DeleteOuch, your travel for work sounds exhausting, and I could never have done that. Once you retire from this job, take your time and pick something that will give you the flexibility you need.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Yes, the next job will definitely be something very low key that allows me a lot of flexibility for adventures & just not as much work. - HP
DeleteI’d love to hear more about how you’re estimating thinks like healthcare in your retirement planning. In terms of child raising, I’m about a decade behind you, but always working to estimate when enough is enough. I think we’re fine once we can withdraw from 401ks, but the there will be a gap of time where cash will need to carry us and I’m always working to put more precision to that number.
ReplyDeleteM is likely to keep working for longer than me, so we would be able to get healthcare from him. Once he's done, we would likely use Covered California to buy a plan on the marketplace, which would be pricey, so factoring that into our savings. M is older than me, so eligible for withdrawing from his 401k in just a few years. - HP
DeleteAs much as I loathe flying, I would be in a coma if I had to fly to both London and Tokyo in the same month……virtual hugs… Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteLuckily, the two trips are spread out a bit, although I have definitely done both in the same month (maybe September of last year?). London is in April & Tokyo is in July this year, although I have Boulder + Greece in there as well for personal travel. - HP
