The great January clean out begins, and first harvest of 2014

We spent the first three hours of our day cleaning out the kids rooms. Phew! So much in there that needed to come out. M is about to head to Goodwill with five large shopping bags of stuff, plus a giant bin. Lots of outgrown clothes, toys, & books.

I also tidied up a closet, and discovered a few potential eBay items, which I hope to use to offset my girls Las Vegas trip this summer. Time to start thinking about snowflakes again - financial ones, at least. :-)

I also picked our first batch of 2014 fruit from our garden:

  • 8 Valencia oranges
  • 12 lemons
  • 9 mandarins
  • 8 small oranges (variety unknown)
  • 6 avocados

Now, to figure out what to do with all of the bounty! 


Other things on the agenda for the day:

  1. Haircuts for the kids.
  2. Making a couple of dinners for the freezer.
  3. Figuring out what to do with all of the fruit.
  4. Yoga, weights, & a run.
  5. Bake bread.
  6. Take the kids to an arcade - they have gift cards. ;-)
  7. Hit Rite Aid to use a $2 reward that's about to expire. 
  8. Pick up cucumber at the produce stand.
  9. Start working on our wills and/or taxes. Both are super fun projects, so I'll do whichever one I'm most in the mood for. Good times around here!
  10. Organize my pantry.

    Updating our wills and company year end are our "fun" projects month too lol. I am so jealous of all that home picked citrus!

      Ahh yes, so fun! ;-) I opted to juice everything, as the mandarins have seeds & my kids are opposed. We use the juice as the base for smoothies. Yum!

    Yummy! I so miss fruit... soooo good! This weekend I need to sew & work on laundry... nothing exciting. ;)

      I love weekends like this - I get so much done & feel productive. We didn't have any official plans, so it was clean out the garage, harvest the fruit, work around the house & in the kitchen, etc. Next up, we're taking the kids to the local school to run around while we run/walk/limp around the track. ;-)

    I would love to have your fruit trees. It seems like getting rid of kids clothes and toys is an ongoing project.

      I love this house & all of the mature fruit trees. We would snap it up in a minute if the owners put it on the market.

    that is so neat being able to pick all that fruit from your trees. We were just talking about getting our tax software bought; we were going to do it online, but I found a gift card for Best Buy so hoping there's enough on that to cover the cost.

      I like to leave it out on the table as a decoration, but there's too much of it. It's taking over the kitchen!

    Oooh I would be juicing and having guacamole today!
    Our wills were done again when kid # 3 born 7+ years ago. Still good for now. Taxes and investment research and household budget await me! Wheee! (So not my thing!)
    Freezer inventory, meal plan and groceries for the week will be this morning.
    (I am jealous of the citrus!)

      One thing I've learned since having an avocado tree - they don't ripen on the tree! I had no idea. I kept waiting for them to soften up to pick them. I finally did some research, & you have to ripen them inside - I use a brown sack with a banana to speed things along. Sam (my oldest) is a huge fan of guacamole, so I try to pick a few a week to ripen slowly.

      I juiced all of the citrus, so I'm considering that my arm workout for today. ;-) Good luck with all of your "fun" projects!

    Wow! You guys had a lot of tasks for the day, but I'm glad that you were able to do everything! It's nice that you cleaned your kids' rooms. It is an unspoken rule that we have to make our house as clean and as safe as possible for our family. The next time you have a cleaning project, you can rely on trusted suppliers to provide you with superb cleaning materials.
