Frugal Friday

And, by frugal, I'll use a loose definition, because it's been really just business as usual for us this week. Although it feels boring to recap a standard week, maybe it will be useful for others. If nothing else, it reminds me that every small frugal step that is a habit is part of a lifetime of financial fitness.

So, what frugal wins did we have this week?

  1. Arranged carpools to soccer. This is standard, but saves us a tremendous amount of driving time.
  2. Made all dinners at home. Really scrambled this week, as I was out of town & didn't cook much over the weekend.
  3. Line dried the majority of our laundry. (We do machine dry towels, socks, etc).
  4. I drove to work every day in our electric car, and charged for free at work.
  5. Even though I had late & early meetings (12 hours/day), and there was no standard meal service at work, I avoided Starbucks or takeout. Both were very tempting.
  6. I inventoried our freezer on Sunday, which allowed me to see exactly what I could cobble together for dinners. In a double win, it also helped me to create more freezer space.
  7. Ripened several garden tomatoes in a bag with a banana. Free tomatoes from the garden . . . yum!

What about you? What have you been up to this past week?

  1. Every little bit helps! I am still getting tomatoes too - just about time to take them all off the vine here though, we usually get our first frost mid October (although it is still 68 degrees for daytime highs here). Most other Provinces in Canada have already had snow! I don't miss that for nothing. Have a great weekend!

    1. I love a fresh tomato! The squirrels have really eaten the vast majority of our garden this year, so I need to figure out a better solution for next year!

  2. We did a ton of home cooking the past two weeks but we also have been eating lots of salads as we are on an add-veggies kick and apparently salads are the easiest way to do that. Now I have to figure how to cook that eggplant I bought for them to eat!

    1. Yum! Sounds delicious. One of my favorite recipes lately is a cilantro jalapeno hummus. We have a lot of garden jalapenos, and it's the knock of version of the Trader Joes hummus. I use it as a savory add on to pretty much everything. I had to give up dairy, and I find that the hummus nicely replaces cheese in many sandwiches, etc.

  3. Our growing season is coming to an end, but I sure loved the tomato's a co worker shared, Now time to give back with thrifty homemade bread.

    1. Ohh, that sounds good! Wish we lived closer. I'd trade you for jalapenos & lime? That's what we have growing right now, as we're at the end with our tomatoes as well. I also have some basil.
