Working on my 2026 goals

I feel like I have so much I want to accomplish in 2026, maybe because it's a milestone birthday, or as the boys get older, they require less of our time (definitely not less money ;-)), and I have more time to set goals for my own self development. Regardless, there's a lot on the list this year. I may cut back as it gets closer to January.

For now, here's what I'm thinking.

Financial:

  • Continue to pay for both boys college expenses
  • Earn $2000 in side hustle
  • Stay on top of food waste by doing monthly pantry or freezer challenges
  • Make an anonymous and meaningful donation to someone in my community who needs it
  • Optimize points, perks & miles for travel. Track value over the year.
Family:
  • Continue to help the boys navigate college
  • Monthly dates with M
  • Travel:
    • Plan & have two fantastic international trips - New Zealand & Greece
    • Plan a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park
    • Go on four local hiking trips
    • Plan a trip to Hawaii with M, the boys & my parents

Fitness:

  • Lose 10 lbs
  • Strength train 125 days
  • No S diet 125 days
  • Average 12,000 steps/day
  • Try a new workout
Personal:
  • Practice Spanish 100 times
  • Declutter 500 items from the house
  • Take a college class or art class
  • Get together with friends
  • Try something new & uncomfortable
  • Say yes to more adventures
  • Get to know our neighbors better
  • Host at least 4 events at our house
  • Master a complex cooking technique, or at least one difficult recipe
  • Offer to have 2 networking chats with new grads

What about you? Have you thought about 2026 goals? If so, what's on your list that you hope to accomplish?

Fitness Monday

It was a very good health & fitness week. A few of the changes that I attribute to having the biggest impact are:

  • No snacking
  • Tracking my food before the day starts, to have a good plan before I get distracted
  • Focusing on filling up on lots & lots of veggies, so I'm not as hungry & not as interested in snacks
  • Measuring alcohol, because apparently I had a very heavy pour before this
  • I suppose the "what you eat" mattering almost as much as how many calories you are eating. Which I've always known, but after cleaning up my eating to be eliminate all of those little unhelpful calorie intakes, I started to see some actual progress.

Weight - 155.5 (down 4.5 lbs from my high a couple of weeks ago). Goal is ~140. Down 1.9 lbs since last week.

Calories - 1415/day. This includes one meal out (lunch) with our neighbors this weekend, and three days (Friday-Sunday) where I had wine. I want to be able to have some special occasions, and enjoy a glass of wine on the weekends while we make dinner. To make that fit into my calories goals, the rest of the meal choices have to be very on point.

Steps - 13,432 - I worked hard to make sure I got in my steps this week, even with the weather not being terribly cooperative a few of the days.

Workouts:

  • 4 workout classes
  • 1 5 mile hike
  • 1 3 mile walk
  • 1 2 mile walk + 30 minutes of elliptical

Goals for the week - my biggest goal is just to keep going. My appetite has definitely shrunk a bit, and getting through those first few weeks of uncomfortable hunger means that I don't necessarily want to go through that again. I'm fine with some splurges, but if I plan them out & make tradeoffs, I'm hoping I can stick to my bigger goals.

What about you? How did you do with your health & fitness goals last week?

Menu Plan Sunday

Another busy week whizzing by, and having a meal plan always helps me feel more prepared. Here's what we will be eating this week.

  • Friday - crazy, crazy day, so M & I enjoyed a glass of wine while we made our "go to, easy, no other food is available, we don't want to prep a proper meal" dinner of chicken wings & gyozas. Luckily, I'd consumed a lot of vegetables earlier that day & throughout the week. ;-)
  • Saturday - butternut squash soup, sourdough bread & roasted carrots
  • Sunday - one pot chicken and rice
  • Monday - leftover soup
  • Tuesday - easy sesame chicken and rice
  • Wednesday - leftover one pot chicken
  • Thursday - leftover sesame chicken
  • Friday - we get to pick up Nick from the airport (hurrah!), so something fast
What about you? What's on your menu this week?

Saturday things

I slept in this morning (although, woke up to messages from my boss, which was a very fun start to my day), and the extra sleep was so fabulous! I'm not a napper, so sleeping in (until close to 7), felt glorious.

Nick took some gorgeous pictures of the Aurora Borealis earlier in the week, from outside his dorm:

I want to start working on some of my goals for 2026, as well as lock in a bit more on our budget & plans around that, which sounds like a good thing to do this weekend.

Here's what's on the agenda for today:

  • Morning hike, hopefully before it rains
  • Meeting our neighbors for lunch. Getting to know our neighbors was on my bucket list, and I met another neighbor for a walk earlier this week. These particular neighbors also have a son who is a freshman at Boulder, so I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about!
  • Menu planning - almost done with this
  • Keep an eye on work (yay)
  • Go to the outdoor store to find hiking boots & a backpack for M. I got him one for our anniversary, but he wants to try on some other options & see which he prefers. We both have a list of other things we need for a 5 day New Zealand hiking trip. I want him to have lots of time to break in his boots & experiment with gear.
  • Meal prep (may shift to tomorrow)
  • Make butternut squash soup & roasted carrots
That's it from my side. What are you up to today?

Frugal Friday

It's been a busy week, but I didn't have to drive to/from the office, which made all the difference in my schedule. I also had a weekend at home to meal prep and get things done, which was also wonderful.

Saving on things we buy

  • Received $1.34 back on our Lyft ride from the airport on Sunday (LV trip). Sam took us to the airport, but had to work on Sunday. I also stacked the cash back offer with a $10 credit, to save a bit more. Altogether, our out of pocket spending was ~$20 including tip, which wasn't too bad. We did price out parking, but it was more than one way of a ride share.
  • I won three free nights in Las Vegas + a $1500 credit (can be used for food, spa, etc) & it needed to be used by the end of January. I didn't want to waste such a big value, as it's at our favorite hotel, but also didn't want to pay for a flight for a "bonus" trip, and schedules are tight in that timing. Instead, Michael & I were already invited to a NYE event, so I was able to tack those days on & my parents will join us. We also purchased their flights, and it's their Christmas gift. They were super thrilled & have been wanting to go to Las Vegas for a few years now, but decided to instead spend their travel money visiting the grand kids. At 75 & 73, it always feels great to help treat them, because you never know how long they will be able to travel (and, enjoy travel) for.
Earning money

  • Sold a book & a hat on eBay & made $13.

Avoiding spending

  • Picked 5 pomegranate from our tree. Now, last year we had 40+, but this year we had...squirrels. I'm frustrated (they also ate everything in our vegetable garden), but we will enjoy the 5 pomegranate.
  • I also picked green onions that we've planted & replanted continuously, and didn't need to buy any for a recipe.

Eating what we have

  • Made an orzo dish that didn't turn out that great, but did use up some freezer/pantry ingredients (orzo, rotisserie chicken, chicken broth). I'll need to spice it up when serving leftovers.
  • Roasted an enormous amount of veggies + the last of the chicken sausages, and used that as the base for my lunches this week.
  • Also made a Dijon chicken dish, and used up chicken broth from the freezer. Several of our dinners were big enough to eat 2x, and still have leftovers for the freezer, which is always nice.

For others

  • Can't think of anything this week, but this is a good reminder to look for opportunities next week.
What about you? Any wins to share?

Thursday Happenings

It's a pretty quiet day at work (and can I just say HURRAH) after a very busy Monday-Wednesday. It's nice to have a few minutes of down time.

M & I have been eating leftovers, I've been eating the delicious roasted veggies & we enjoyed the front half of the week's glorious weather. It's now pouring buckets, which I know we need, but is still a bit gloomy.

A photo of the giant bowl of roasted veggies (plus chicken sausage on top). It was huge, but the angle makes it hard to tell, so water bottle for comparison.

I discovered one of my credit cards was fraudulently used, so I spent some time tracking that down, reporting the card as stolen, marking the transaction as fraud, combing through other transactions & then checking my credit report. Luckily, everything else looks okay. Fingers crossed.

I'm heading to an afternoon workout class, and otherwise, just trying to chip away at some to dos on the list, including taking a long work training. A quiet meeting day is the perfect time to catch up on trainings and the like.

What are you up to today?

Better late than never - October Goals Recap

I'm again late on this, but it really helps me to complete my goals at the end of each month, & see how I did. While not perfect, October was a pretty good month on all fronts except... fitness. Menopause is kicking my b*tt, and I'm not enjoying it. I've oddly gained weight in my upper midsection, and it's making all of my clothes not fit. I know I need to make pretty significant adjustments to my nutrition/calorie intake, but luckily my fitness routine is good & I'm focused on strength training as well, which is super important as we age.

Anyway, here's how I did this month.

Financial:

  • Sort out 529 contribution + match -  done
  • Figure out fitness reimbursement - $480 submitted, done
  • Meal plan & use up 3 freezer/pantry items - used up chicken & dumplings, + 3 containers of chicken broth, & bonus points for cleaning & organizing the pantry
  • Start planning for 2026 budget - planning has begun

Family:

  • Get Nick's Thanksgiving flights sorted - done
  • One date night with M - lunch + couples massage for our 20th anniversary!
  • Start planning post Christmas trip - have sent initial plans + reservations
  • Have an amazing 20th anniversary with M - yes!

Fitness:

  • Lose 2 lbs - gained 1 lb
  • Get back to regular fitness check ins - started at the beginning of the month & fell off by the end
  • 15 & 15 (stretch & No S days) - 14 & 7
  • Run a 10k - yes, & felt great
  • Average 12,500 steps/day - 11,881

Personal:

  • Successfully complete huge work project - yes, went really well & got great feedback
  • Get together with friends x2 - lots of hikes, walks + trip to Las Vegas
  • Finish planning concert trip - yes, and it was amazing
  • Have an awesome long weekend with my sister + BFF + Brunch with my parents - yes, fabulous
  • Say yes to adventure & trying new things - nothing really came up
  • Continue to work on work/life balance - took a day off & thoroughly enjoyed it
  • Declutter 50 items - 89/50
  • Work on travel planning & budget - yes, lots of great progress on both of the trips (NZ & Greece)

What about you? How did you do with your October goals? Any wins to share?

Fitness Monday

Weight: I dropped 2.6 lbs, although the last time I weighed in was more like several weeks ago, so this isn't a month on month drop. For clarity, I'm just going to share my actual weight, to make it easier to understand. It's hard to follow along otherwise. So, I'm currently at 157.4, and my ideal weight is around 140, as I have a pretty muscular build.

Calories: average daily calories of 1,582. Monday-Thursday was a little more difficult, as I was eating three meals a day out of the house, due to work events. Friday-Sunday were really great eating days, with well planned calories & great overall nutrition.

Steps: I'm keeping a close eye on my steps, as I need to not drop from the 12k/day to hit my yearly goal. I had some lower days early in the week (all of that office time + the commute on both sides really slowed me down), but I did do some walking 1:1s, went to the gym before a dinner event (x2) & went on a long hike this weekend (after my regular workout). All that to say that I finished the week with 13,289/day steps.

Workouts: same story as above, with some challenges getting in my workout earlier in the week due to the commute & in office days + evening events.

  • 2 elliptical workouts
  • 1 - 7 mile hike
  • 3 workout classes

Goals for the week: my goals for the week are to keep up the progress. The only anomaly to my schedule is that we are going out with friends on either Friday or Saturday, which always risks spiking the calories. I will plan out my calories in advance & choose a healthy-ish option for dinner. I've found that tracking my calories & planning my meals in advance is incredibly helpful to staying on track. There's no mental debate if I can eat something. It's either factored into the calories for the day, or not. I sometimes swap a piece of fruit for another, but any swaps I make need to balance out to the same calories.

Overall, it was a pretty good week, considering my crazy schedule Monday-Thursday. What about you? How are you doing on your health & fitness goals?

Menu Plan Sunday

Trying to get into a bit of a rhythm again, and meal planning definitely helps with that.

Here's what we're eating this week.

  • Friday - Chicken & orzo (chicken broth + rotisserie chicken from the freezer)
  • Saturday - creamy Dijon chicken
  • Sunday - Korean beef rice bowls
  • Monday - leftover chicken skillet
  • Tuesday - grilled chicken & rice
  • Wednesday -  leftover Dijon chicken
  • Thursday - leftover beef bowls
  • Friday - leftover grilled chicken & rice
Lots of chicken again this week! I need to stock up on some fish, so we can rotate that through.

What about you? What's on your menu for the week?

November Goals

I'm very late to the party, but as with many things in life, better late than never. My core focus this month is fitness. The rest of my goals are a bit on autopilot at the moment, but that's an area I really need to focus on, as I wrestle with my menopause body changes.

Financial:

  • Offer to help with financial planning for sister + BFF (they've expressed interest before)
  • Earn $200 of side hustle
  • Finalize 2026 budget
Family:

  • One date night with M
  • Have a fabulous Thanksgiving + break with the family
  • Start on Christmas gifts. We buy for a very limited number of people, so this is usually pretty straightforward.
  • Decide on NYE plans.

Fitness:

  • Lose 2 lbs
  • Get back to regular fitness check ins
  • 15 & 15 - strength training & No S days
  • Meal prep for lunches
  • Average 12,500 steps/day
Personal:
  • Get together with friends x2
  • Say yes to adventure & trying new things
  • Declutter 50 items
  • Work on travel planning & budgets
  • Work on bucket list planning

What about you? What are you hoping to accomplish in November?

Frugal Friday

This won't be my usual list, as I have had a crazy week & no time to write a proper post.

A few frugal things I've been up to:

  • Jumped through some hoops to register status on my credit card, to get Southwest A list, which will be nice & save some money on future travel.
  • Ate dinners from the freezer (mostly M + Sam, some me), because I didn't meal prep or have time to really cook. For example, last night was half of a frozen cauliflower pizza + some shrimp scampi (freezer) + salad.
  • Ate the free lunch at work, Monday-Thursday. Also had free dinner at work Monday, Tuesday & Thursday, although would have definitely preferred being at home.
  • Went to a company merchandise sale, where everything was $1 (limit 10) & all of the proceeds went to the Make a Wish Foundation. Bought 8 items. Sam can look through anything he wants, and found a hoodie that I think will work for my nephew. Will donate anything that's unclaimed.
  • Sam picked up a few extra work shifts. I tried to leave easy dinner leftovers for him to reheat.
  • The majority of our trip last weekend was comped - we paid for tips & M arranged for a surprise spa service, which we also paid for.
  • Drove to the office extra early one day to participate in a volunteer event, which was loading cars with food supply donations at a non-profit. We ran out of a lot of things, and folks can only come through this particular food pantry once a month, so I felt terrible that they weren't going to be getting any meat, canned goods or dairy. We did have a lot of fresh produce, bread, etc, but I know that won't last long when trying to feed a family.
I really, really need a weekend at home to get my life back in order & prep for the week ahead. Looking forward to meal planning & shopping, and getting organized.

What about you? Any wins to share?

All of the tired things

First off, we had an absolutely incredible time in Las Vegas. M planned everything, and I have such amazing friends, all of whom gelled fabulously. I feel so lucky that I have such amazing women in my life. The trip was pretty much perfect from top to bottom, especially impressive was the 8 different flights out of four different airports, none of which were delayed at all! We had wonderful dinners, laughed A LOT, loved the concert, and just had total shenanigans by the pool, at the casino & getting ready for dinners. I'm incredibly lucky.

After I planned this trip, my work decided that our mandatory "in office" week would be this week, complete with 14 hour days (work + evening social events). I knew that the timing would be abysmal, as Las Vegas isn't exactly a place known for getting a lot of sleep. I'm absolutely exhausted. Laundry is everywhere, the house is a wreck, I haven't seen anyone since Sunday...

I will be VERY excited when Friday rolls around, and I can get back to my regularly scheduled life. As with everything, work stacks up while we are spending time in training sessions & getting to know each other. It's all very valuable, especially as a new person, but it's time intensive on top of other work, so I'm falling behind there.

That's all. Life is good. This weekend made me feel incredibly spoiled to have such an amazing network of people I can laugh with, and who are there for me through all of life's many adventures.

Frugal Friday

It's definitely not going to be a frugal weekend, but here are a few things we've been doing!

Saving on things we buy

  • Booked our hotel in Greece to take advantage of a credit card offer. I received: a $250 statement credit & a few perks as well. A $100 hotel dining credit, as well as breakfast for two for our stay. I should be also receiving a $100 cash back statement from the credit card, so I will keep my eye on that. I chose a hotel that was also associated with Hyatt, where I have status, so we can get our third meal for free as well.

Earning money

  • Sold a set of Air Tags & made $62.
  • My insurance let me know that I was eligible for an incentive for a wellness visit/yearly check up. Sam & I have both had a yearly check up, so I filled that out & had no idea how much we would get. I received $75x2, which I will definitely take!

Avoiding spending

  • Met an acquaintance at Starbucks (more on that below) & used a Starbucks gift card to pay for my tea.
  • We get Apple TV through our credit card, so we cancelled Netflix.

Eating what we have

  • We made a delicious sheet pan dinner, and ate that for two nights.
  • M made rice on Sunday, so I turned that into an opportunity to defrost two dishes that needed rice to round them out - the beef/tomato/garbanzo bean dish & chicken curry. This moved things out of our freezer, and saved us time on a busy week.

For others

  • A friend of a friend has a daughter who was just diagnosed with lupus. She introduced us & asked if I would be willing to talk about what my experience has been like. Her daughter is much younger (12), but shared all of the information, and hope it helps as they navigate this.
What about you? Any wins to share?

Wednesday, October 29, 2025

It's Wednesday

Which means, I only have 1.5 days left until I'm on vacation! Woohoo. I'm very excited about seeing my friends & seeing how the group mingles. Luckily, it's a fabulous group of women who I adore. Two of them are hikers, so I can also imagine future hiking trips together.

My sister works wayyyyy to much, so it's great for her to take a "forced" break from work. And, it's almost my BFFs 50th birthday, so this will be an advanced celebration for both of us. Plus, Alanis! Can't wait. I'm not much of a concert person, but think it will be fabulous. Let's hope I can stay awake long enough. I'm an early bird. ;-)

I also expect that the Halloween costumes in Las Vegas will be...quite hilarious people watching.

What I need to do today:

  • All of the meetings
  • Work on team strategy stuff
  • Catch up on a project
  • Finalize packing
  • Check in for flight
  • Sort dinner
  • Find 2 more items to give away
  • Attend treadmill class (it's my 5th hard workout in a row, so that will be tricky!)
  • Work in the yard for 15 minutes at lunch (the sunshine is a game changer mid-day)
  • Laundry for Sam before I leave. Yes, he knows how to do his own laundry, but our washer is intermittently leaking, and I'd just prefer to monitor it & deal with it before we leave.
  • Pick up the house

What are you up to today? Anything fun?

Bucket list for the upcoming decade?

I hope I won't need an entire decade, but turning 50 has got me thinking about what I want to check off of my bucket list. I have a BUNCH of travel destinations & a few other things in mind. Mostly, I feel so incredibly grateful for everything in my life, and I want to keep pushing myself, trying new things, helping other people & just experiencing life.

This is not at all complete, as I'm actively soliciting input, so please share what's on your bucket list! And, in no particular order.

  1. Take an art class
  2. Improve at Spanish
  3. Another family trip to see M's mom (and, sister, cousins, etc.)
  4. Another trip to Hawaii with my parents
  5. Make an anonymous & very meaningful donation to someone in my community who needs it. (I have nothing in mind for this, but something in this general arena of giving. May ask a friend who is very connected in the community for suggestions.)
  6. Get to know our neighbors more.
    1. Invite our elderly neighbor for dinner
    2. Make plans with our neighbors behind us who have a son at Boulder as well
    3. Go for a walk or hike with our neighbor across the way
    4. Learn the name of the neighbors & I occasionally chat with. (Embarrassing, but true!)
  7. Travel bucket list:
    1. Hiking trip to New Zealand
    2. Italy with M
    3. Greece girls trip
    4. Take M to Japan
    5. Hike the Camino de Santiago
    6. Iceland
    7. Patagonia
    8. Maldives
    9. 10+ national parks
    10. Spain/Portugal
    11. Banff/Lake Louise
    12. Alaska
    13. Ireland
    14. Scotland
    15. Lots of additional hiking trips
  8. Get comfortable with entertaining
  9. Create a scholarship at the high school the boys attended
  10. Figure out my "next act", after my current job
  11. Master a complex cooking technique or at least 5 difficult recipes
  12. Create at least 5 meaningful surprises for other people
  13. Volunteer at a local school
  14. Learn a new hobby with M
  15. Offer to have a networking chat with 5 new grads
Hit me with ideas! Very interested in hearing from you on what you would put on a bucket list, or wish you had done at a different time in your life.

Fitness Monday

Going through menopause & trying to lose weight is...daunting, shall we say. I'm certainly not a perfect eater, with a perfect workout routine, but I do put in a lot of effort & see minimal results on the weight side. It's easy to get frustrated, but I'm reminding myself that many women gain weight during menopause. I'm not only trying to avoid that, I'm working to lose weight during a time that my body is going through a lot of other changes, in addition to lifestyle changes (new job).

Weight: Holding steady week on week, but up 4.3 lbs since my low of the year (which was in May).

Calories: average of 1,695/day, as I had two splurges for our anniversary + an unexpected dinner out on Friday. I did have 3 No S days, which was a nice trend.

Steps: I didn't do any long hikes/walks this week, which was a bit unusual & led to a lower daily step average - 10,943. This is also a good reminder to see where I am for 2025, and ensure I'm on track for my annual goal.

Workouts:

  • 4 workout classes (mix of cardio + strength)
  • 3 walks
  • 1 40 minute elliptical workout

Goals for the week: It's going to be a high calorie weekend Thursday-Sunday, so my goal is to really keep things in check the rest of the week, and ideally get 3 No S days, with lowered calories, to balance things out.

What about you? How are you doing with your fitness goals?

Menu Plan Sunday

It's a partial menu plan around here, as we are out of town for a very fun long weekend! My BFF has her 50th birthday in November, so we are meeting up in Las Vegas with my sister, and a few other friends & going to a concert & getting up to general shenanigans.

  • Friday - grilled burgers (from the freezer)
  • Saturday - grilled chicken & rice
  • Sunday - fall sheet pan dinner (new to us) - update, we made this last night & loved it. Highly recommend! We subbed butternut squash in for the sweet potatoes. Delicious & super easy.
  • Monday - leftover rice + chicken curry from the freezer
  • Tuesday - grilled chicken salads
  • Wednesday - I want to try & recreate this roasted veggie salad we had recently. We shall see how I do. We will top it with some sort of protein & I'll probably go off of this recipe.
  • Thursday - We are eating at a seafood restaurant
  • Friday - my favorite steak house!
What about you? What's on your menu this week?

Saturday Happenings

M & I ended up going out to dinner last night, and had a lovely evening walking around. The weather was perfect fall - crisp & cool, with lots of changing leaves.

My back was bothering me so much that I ended up taking an OTC medicine I got in Canada (it's for muscle & back pain). I use these very sparingly, but my back pain was reduced greatly. I also iced my back & added heat yesterday, and I do feel a lot better today. Sometimes it's about knocking down the inflammation & irritation, and allowing things to go back to (mostly) normal. At some point, I need to probably get another MRI & see if the bulging disc/nerve issue has gotten worse, or if this was just a short term thing. I like to be optimistic, but can't imagine it's getting any better.

Nick is hanging out with my BFF + her kids at Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend. I feel so lucky that we have (friends like) family there to spend time with him. He also loves hiking, rock climbing, etc, so it's a perfect opportunity for him & the friend he brought. I hope he brought enough warm clothes!

As for today, here's what I have going on:

  • Workout class
  • Packing list for our trip next weekend
  • Menu planning
  • Shopping list
  • Stop by the store
  • Make dinner
  • Do some additional decluttering (inspired by Jackie!)
  • Continue to clean up the hall closets
  • Dead head some plants
What about you? What's on the agenda for today?

Frugal Friday

A few frugal wins this week.

Saving on things we buy

  • Noticed that iBotta had a $.10 reward for any grocery receipt, so got that uploaded. Also uploaded the receipt to Fetch.

Earning money

  • Sold a few things on eBay: luggage tags + an old art print. Made about $25 between the two.
  • The Frugal Girl reminded me that I had a bunch of books (Sam's lit books from school) to list on eBay & got those posted. Sold 2 in 24 hours, so that was a nice win. Junk out, money in. Made about $20 between the two.
  • Gave away a Hyatt free night award to a friend who could use it before it expired, and he thanked me with a $100 gift card.
  • On a related note, had another expiring Hyatt "Guest of Honor" award, and traded that with another friend for ~$100 of Marriott points. While I don't have a use for the points at the moment, they don't expire, unlike the Hyatt award I had. We will definitely use them at some point.
  • Finally had enough Swagbucks to cash out for a $25 Amazon gift card.

Avoiding spending

  • I had a crazy day, and planned my lunch in advance, defrosting soup & stashing my lunch in the fridge. When I went to open the container to heat it, it refused to budge. It was a glass container with the four closure "snap locks" & the vacuum seal was so strong it couldn't be opened. Anyway, I wrestled with that stupid container for the five minutes I had to heat & eat my lunch. I thought about ordering delivery & eating it between my next round of calls, but instead made a very haphazard lunch out of a protein bar I discovered in the back of the pantry (Sam must have missed it -because they are his favorites ;-)) & an overripe banana. M later was able to open the container with a lot of elbow grease & a knife, and Sam had the soup for dinner after work.

Eating what we have

  • We bought a rotisserie chicken at Costco, and used that for two dinners, plus froze half of the rest of the chicken. I then made a large double batch of chicken broth. I've already used one container in the beef & tomato dish we served over rice on Sunday.
  • Speaking of that dish, we made a double batch, as we had Sam & his GF at dinner. I also only had one can of diced tomatoes, so subbed in tomato paste + water & some fresh tomatoes, to make up for the gap.
  • Made plenty of leftovers for the week, including this easy Southwest Chicken Skillet

For others

  • A friend is leading a project to collect new shoes for kids & teens that are unhoused, so I picked up some on Amazon from her wish list, which felt nice.
What about you? Any wins to share?

Thursday Happenings

It's been a reasonably productive week. My manager is out, which means I have fewer 6 am meetings, and who can say no to that? ;-)

I handed off a huge project last Friday, so unblocking that has been such a relief.

I've gotten a lot done personally, which has felt good.

  • Listed a bunch of stuff on eBay
  • Organized my shoes & really cleaned up closet
  • Went through my 3 tiered tray & found a bunch of papers to shred & recycle
  • Gave away 5 notebooks that I found in my tray. I prefer a spiral notebook for list making & note taking, so I'd rather just give away the ones I won't use.
  • Gave away Nick's high school graduation party decorations (national park/camping themed)
  • Cleaned out the fridge
  • Planning our budget for 2026
  • Reviewing our 2025 spending & thinking through the "least valuable" spending. Of course, not things out of our control, but areas where we can make adjustments if we are not getting the value we want out of the money we are spending.
Today should be pretty similar. I have six meetings, and wrap by five, so I need to get in a workout at lunch.

What about you? What have you been up to lately?

Thinking ahead to the 2026 budget

It's that time of year where we once again start looking at our budget from the current year, comparing it to our spend, determining which categories might need to be adjusted up or down, and evaluate our priorities.

In terms of our major budget items, we have:

Boys:

  • We will again have two kids in college, although Sam's college is costing us a lot less next year, and he is working enough to offset much of his expenses. Nick's college will remain very expensive until he graduates, so that expense continues.
  • The set up costs of moving kids is expensive, and we need to factor that in. We will thrift, buy used, etc but still comes with start up costs depending on the situation.
  • Nick is beginning to take more advanced math & science, so we've ear marked money for a tutor, in the event he needs one. So far, so good there.
Taxes:
  • We will again owe a lot for M's severance, as the payout is not adjusted to correctly reflect our tax bracket. That money is set aside.
  • Otherwise, our property & other income tax should largely remain stable.
Charity/Giving/Donations:
  • We will continue our standard monthly donations, and will add in another charity that buys shoes for teens & kids in shelters.
  • We would like to give my nephew additional money for college, as he will be in his senior year next year.
Travel:
  • 2026 promises to be a pricey travel year.
  • We've got our combined 20th anniversary/50th birthday trip to New Zealand, which will definitely be expensive. The majority of the cost is included in 2025, however.
  • I'm also going to Greece with my sister + BFF for a girls trip/50th combined celebration (apparently, it's a year long thing ;-)), and other than flights, we haven't paid for lodging yet & most of the expenses for this will hit in 2026.
  • We are taking the boys + friends skiing at the end of December, and those costs may land in 2026 as well.
  • Getting Nick to/from college is not cheap, and we've been to Boulder a few times & I expect that to continue next year.
  • We are considering renting a house on the Oregon coast for a family vacation in July, & inviting my sister, nephews, parents, etc.
  • All of that to say, if anything, travel will go up in 2026. We will continue to offset the spending as much as possible by using credits, rewards, perks, etc, but there are still plenty of costs involved.

That's where I'm at so far on the budget, although there are plenty of other categories that require a closer look with inflation. What about you? What changes are you planning for the year ahead?

Fitness Monday

This is a bit of a recap of how the month is going so far, since it's my first Fitness Monday for October. I was a little under the weather for a few days last week, and my work schedule was pretty crazy for another few days, which both impacted the intensity & volume of workouts.

Weight: remains the same, which is not great, as I'm not making progress on dropping the 3 pounds I've gained since I started this job

Calories: this is an estimate, as a few days I didn't accurately track, but I'd say around 1750 is the best average.

Steps: 12,218 average calories per day

Workouts:

  • Two 7 mile hikes
  • I ran a 10k last weekend
  • I've done 6 of my mixed cardio & strength workout classes
  • Two strength training classes
  • One elliptical workout
  • 4 days with walks around ~3 miles or so

Goals for the rest of the month:

  • I want to come as close as possible to my goal of 15 strength workouts. I'm currently at 8.
  • I also want to have 7 no S days
  • And, get the calories dropped down to 1500/day, knowing the end of the month will have some splurges

What about you? How are you doing with your health & fitness goals this month?

Menu Plan Sunday

It's been a bit of a whirlwind, finishing up a big work project, but I'm thrilled it's done! Here's what's on the menu for the week ahead.

  • Friday - an easy dinner of gyozas, wings & salad
  • Saturday - snacky leftovers, after our anniversary lunch out
  • Sunday - beef & tomato rice bowl
  • Monday - Southwest Chicken skillet
  • Tuesday - leftover beef & tomato rice bowl
  • Wednesday - leftover Southwest Chicken skillet
  • Thursday - chicken curry (freezer) & rice (so much rice this week, apparently!)
  • Friday - TBD, or leftovers
What about you? What's on your menu for the week ahead?

Saturday Happenings

M & I were supposed to be in Hawaii, celebrating our 20th anniversary for the next week or so. However, we were both starting new jobs (M starts his new full time job on Monday, after consulting for a few months), so we made a good bet, but it was still a little sad to see those flight reminders pop up on our calendar.

We have plenty of fun things ahead, and decided to make our trip to New Zealand a combined 50th birthday/20th anniversary trip, so lots of opportunities to celebrate just the same.

This weekend is our mini anniversary celebration, and we are getting a couples massage this morning (my surprise to M) at a lovely spa near us. Then we are heading to lunch out at a place we've been wanting to try. We may or may not go to dinner on our actual anniversary mid-week. M may actually have a work event that evening. 😂

Plans for today:

  • Make a menu plan
  • Early workout class
  • Couples massage
  • Lunch together
  • Return a few things at the mall (all of the items I ordered to try on have come in, and those I'm not keeping are ready to be returned)
  • Laundry
  • Pick up the house
  • Give away more on Buy Nothing
  • List books on eBay
Anything that doesn't get done today can roll over to tomorrow. I handed off my big work project yesterday & feel so relieved to get that checked off. Still plenty of work to do, but removing that project from my plate feels absolutely fabulous.

What about you? What are you up to today?

Frugal Friday

Not too much to report this week, but here goes.

Saving on things we buy

  • I adjusted our Christmas flights to leave a bit later due to work schedules, and received a $25 refund per person. So, $100 off the total price.
  • I bought my parents flights on Southwest a while ago, and had to change the flights. They each received credits. They do not like to fly Southwest & wanted to offer the credits to me. I was easily able to transfer my mom's credit ($45), but my dad's $120 credit is somehow impossible to transfer. Maybe I will figure it out next time we're together (holidays).
  • I bought wrapping supplies for the gifts I picked up for our 20th anniversary (a cool canvas photo collage, a hiking backpack & a bladder for our New Zealand trip) & used my $10 CVS monthly credit. I also saved a $3 off a $12 purchase coupon to my account. The out of pocket cost was $2.15, but I also earned a $3 reward for a future transaction, so it was a bit of a money maker for next time.

Earning money

  • Made a whopping $8 selling something on eBay. About once a month we receive an Amazon package for something we didn't order (made out to my husband, at our address). It's some sort of scam involving false user reviews. We've reported it to Amazon numerous times, but they don't want the items back. I have them listed on eBay and have sold a few along the way.

Avoiding spending

  • When I was out of town last weekend, Sam was able to drop me off for my flight, and M picked me up, avoiding needing to book a transit option.

Eating what we have

  • It's been chilly & rainy here, so the soups I made a week or so ago are coming in quite handy for lunches.
  • I also pulled some meatballs out of the freezer, and made an impromptu spaghetti & meatballs dish, when our dinner plans fell through. I didn't feel like doing a tomato sauce, so I did Nick's preferred version, which is pasta with olive oil & parmesan, meatballs on top, and then diced tomatoes, more parmesan & salt & pepper. Easy & quick.

For others

  • As I always do when we are together, I help my parents with tech troubleshooting. ;-) Got a bunch of stuff sorted for them.
What about you? Any wins to share?

Frugal Friday

In decidedly unfrugal news, I bought a few new dresses for my 50th birthday/girls trip/Alanis Morissette concert. I'm pretty excited about everything & there will definitely be sequins + combat boots involved for the concert (Las Vegas meets alt/grunge). I already have the boots, as a former Seattle girl. Luckily, they are very much back in style! If you are interested in that type of thing, see the end of the post. Again, for decidedly unfrugal balance to my list of frugal things. Keeping it real here. ;-)

Saving on things we buy

  • I was really trying to maximize errands while grocery shopping, and picked up some delicious fruit at the orchard stand, and then hit the grocery store for a last few items. I needed two cans of coconut milk, and noticed the cheapest kind was $5.99!!!! Outrageous. I made another stop at Trader Joes (not far away, but the parking is a big hassle) was $1.89/can. I don't mind paying a bit more for convenience, but this was a huge price gap.
  • I had another credit card offer redeemed, with Nick's music subscription. I saved $1.20, so nothing big, but easy enough to earn.

Earning money

  • Despite starting my job later in the year, I went with a very high 401k deduction, so I could hit the max for the year. I've now maxed out my 401k, which means my paychecks are much larger than the first few months of my employment. Hurrah!
  • I also filled out my wellness reimbursement ($480 for the year), which covered two months of gym memberships + most of a massage I got last Friday. I feel lucky that I started my new job on 6/30, as that was the last day to qualify for the second half of the reimbursement.
  • For the United cancellations, we received $175 each for our cancelled Denver flight + 10,000 miles/each. For the London flight cancellation, I received a $1,000 flight credit + a $650 credit. Assuming the United points are worth about $200, that's a total of $2200. While not ideal to have the cancellations, we will definitely use the United credits, given Nick's closest airport is Denver (a United hub).

Avoiding spending

  • After a later workout, and not having had lunch, I was starving & very tempted to hit up a Mediterranean place right next to the workout studio I was at. They do customized Mediterranean bowls (Chipotle style, but with 3x the amount of add ins) & I was very tempted. I reminded myself that there were definitely options in the freezer, and had a snack of cheese & crackers while I defrosted chicken & dumplings from my freezer stash. Not quite the same, but also free, and ensures we don't waste food.
  • Similarly, M was gone for dinner for a few nights, and Sam & I would sometimes do takeout for a place M doesn't prefer. Instead, I picked up some really fabulous ravioli at Trader Joes (goat cheese & caramelized onions) & we had that with leftover diced tomatoes + chicken from the freezer.

Eating what we have

  • Made chicken noodle soup for Sam, when he wasn't feeling well. Bonus, used up the last of a bag of carrots & an open container of pasta.
  • Also used three containers of chicken broth in the soup. The chicken broth came out of the freezer, and was made after we bought a rotisserie chicken. I'm now out of broth, so perhaps will make some more.
  • I stocked the freezer with the chicken noodle soup (above) as well as a delicious potato soup I made as well.
  • I've been leaving leftovers in the fridge for Sam, so he can eat when he gets home from work, instead of going out. He really loved the leftovers of the chicken sausage & bean dish I made earlier in the week.

For others

  • Noticed a neighbor needed a bunch of stuff for a family member starting over. Remembered I had a few things on eBay that came from Sam's dorm room (new in package, because teen boys don't always use all of their stuff ;-)) & gave them away. Felt nice to pass them along & clear out my eBay closet.

On to the fashion...

Sequined skirt, to be worn with combat boots & some sort of black top. Haven't landed on that. Maybe with tights? Full grunge would be ripped tights, but I'm too old for that. I'm a lot shorter than the model, so this has more length on me.

Deciding between either this dress in black or the blue:

Thursday Happenings

I'm feeling very tired this morning. I have ongoing back pain, which is aggravated by laying down, making sleep quite hard to achieve. I have tried a variety of over the counter options for this, but decided to go cold Turkey last night & take nothing for my back pain, for the first time in 5 years. (My doctor had approved a variety of options, given sleep is such an important part of maintaining my health with lupus.) That said, anything you take regularly can have other complications.

Oh my, it was a disaster! I was up from 1-4 am, and somehow all of the problems of the world were keeping me up. My brain would not stop, because I couldn't get comfortable. I also kept M up, which he was thrilled about. ;-)

Anyway, on to real life. I have early meetings this morning, and unfortunately had to get up early, despite having just started sleeping again a bit. I wish I was a napper, because I could definitely use a nap at lunch! Instead, I'll get out for a walk or something, to get my blood flowing.

I leave for Portland tomorrow, and am looking forward to seeing my BFF, sister & my parents. My sister, BFF, mom & I are doing a 10k together on Sunday - it's a women's only event for breast cancer. Then we will have brunch with my dad as well. I fly back home on Monday, as it's a holiday at my office.

Positive things:

  • Made the chicken curry dish last night from my menu, and it was so delicious. Prepped all of the veggies & chicken ahead of time, so it would be easy to pull together after my workout class. Of course, forgot the cilantro & green onions in the fridge when serving. ;-)
  • Had a great workout yesterday & achieved my step goals. Bonus points that a friend happened to be attending my workout class, so we caught up for a few minutes.
  • M was able to confirm all of our plans for Las Vegas, and our itinerary is a go!
  • We got to have dinner with Sam last night, and it was great to hear him talking about where he would like to potentially transfer when he's got his AA. I think the person he met with gave him not great advice this summer, and he needs to add a math class, three weeks into the quarter. Not ideal, but he will get good advice tomorrow with his actual advisor.

That's it. I'm going to focus on staying awake & being functional today! Hope you have a great day.

Fitness Monday

I tried really hard to get myself back on track, now that I'm home have & no international travel planned until January. I also had a bonus day off this week, which was absolutely lovely.

Weight: Down a lb from the previous week, but for full transparency, I'm up 4.3 lbs from my low (in May, before I started working, of course. ;0)

Calories: 1,527/day, and pretty consistent

Steps: 12,541/day, and I had to come back from a really low step day on Tuesday, so feeling good about this.

Workouts:

  • 4 workout classes (a mix of cardio + strength training)
  • 1 hr slow walking on the treadmill while I worked
  • 30 minute elliptical workout
  • 7+ mile hike

Overall nutrition/goals:

  • It was a good week for nutrition, although I could definitely use more leafy greens. I ate a lot of fruit, and overall ate well, with minimal sugar, alcohol or excess.
  • I feel good about getting back on track & had an intentional week, helped greatly by no traveling & the bonus day off.
Goals for the week are to stay the course, and finish my 10k successfully on Sunday!

What about you? How did you do with your health & fitness goals last week?

Menu Plan Sunday

I took advantage of the weekend to do some meal prep, and made Chicken noodle soup and Creamy potato soup. Yay for bonus days off!

What's on your menu this week? Any good recipes to share?

Weekend Happenings

It feels like Sunday, because I had yesterday off & it was ever so glorious! I met a friend for a workout class, ran some errands & got groceries, got a massage, and then made a big pot of chicken noodle soup for Sam. He hasn't been feeling well & loves soup. He also forgot his work shoes at home, so I drove those to him in Friday night traffic. He's usually pretty good about it, but needed to unexpectedly pick up the GF, which threw off his schedule.

The chicken noodle soup turned out to fabulously (first time trying this recipe). I had it for dinner & made enough for Sam to have some + a few lunches, and then froze the rest. It will make quick and easy meals for another few days as well.

What else is on the agenda for today?

  • A workout class - finally feeling like I'm getting back into the workout groove again, and the scale rewarded me with a small drop for my efforts.
  • Meal prep
  • Virtual happy hour with sister + BFF, where we will plan our Las Vegas trip at the end of the month
  • There was supposed to be a get together with my old manager, but I never heard anything else about it, so I'm assuming it's cancelled.
  • I'm going to meal prep a bit more (assuming I'm not going to the aforementioned get together) & will likely make:
  • I've been going for a short & meandering walk around the blocks in the evenings, to boost my step count, after my abysmal September numbers.
  • I also want to do a little yard work
  • And, catch up on the budget & tracking
  • I might figure out what's happening with my 529 matching
  • And, do a couple of hours of work
  • Clean the hall closet
  • Make banana bread
Anything that doesn't' get done today can roll over to tomorrow, which is so lovely! What about you? What's on your list for this weekend?

Frugal Friday (several weeks worth)

This is a combined Frugal Friday from a few weeks worth of adventures.

Saving on things we buy

  • I'll always take smooth travel over snafus, but I will certainly be getting lots of flight credits, miles & vouchers after the two cancellations in a one week travel window. Getting downgraded from a very, very expensive international business class flight will likely only result in my company receiving a credit, I suppose. Once I get the details from United, I'll provide a summary.
  • We received a $40 credit from Avis for receiving a 12 passenger van, when they offered us zero cars & gave away our confirmed rental. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick?
  • I had to go to CVS to pick up a prescription, and decided to combine errands. I picked up a few other things I needed as well, and noticed that iBotta had two different cash back offers for CVS (20% off and I think 2% off. The latter is their standard at CVS). I earned $2.76 back on my purchase through iBotta, and also uploaded all of my receipts to Fetch.

Earning money

  • Not sure how much this is earning money vs recouping what was already spent, but Sam was unable to go to Boulder, as he was moved up into another job at work and had to attend a mandatory training over the weekend. We were all disappointed, but it also meant I had an extra ticket to the football game on Saturday. I offered it to Nick's roommate, any of his friends who might want to join, as well as my BFF's daughter, but everyone had tickets and/or other plans. I listed it back on Seat Geek & recouped about 75% of my original price paid, after fees & dropping the price slightly, when we were 48 hours from the game.
  • This isn't really earning "money", although it's definitely earning rewards. I've been paying for my work travel (minus airfare) with my travel credit card, and earning the perks. There are typically a lot of multipliers on both travel expenses, as well as restaurants, and work trips involve plenty of both. I'm also accruing miles & rewards that I will use for personal travel.
  • I received $15 for a Walmart "weighted goods" settlement I had no idea I was a part of. Just showed up in my Venmo. A quick search turns up that it's something about bagged citrus? No idea and I'm very surprised to get the payment, as I didn't fill out anything or submit a claim (unless I did it a long time ago & have since forgotten???)

Avoiding spending

  • I think I'm in a good place, work wardrobe wise. Have just enough for a couple of business trips without fully repeating outfits. Lots of flexibility on the pants side. I found a great pair of navy pants, but that would require a different pair of shoes. I thought about it, but returned the pants, as I don't really want to have to schlep two different pair of dress shoes, and/or buy a second pair. I'll stick with black & gray, and just mix up the tops. I also remembered I have a pair of dark olive pants that work for a more casual event, so that was the final push to return the navy pants. I wish I already had shoes that worked, because the pants were great. Anyway, received a $35 refund for the return of the pants.

Eating what we have

  • Pulled buns out of the freezer to accompany M's grilled burgers this week.
  • Also defrosted taco meat to have for dinner 2x. That made an easy couple of meals, and also used up tortillas and cheese that were close to expiration.
  • I pulled out a container of chicken & dumplings (made in the crockpot) that I'd made a week or so ago, and that served as a fill in lunch one day.

For others

  • I gave away Sam's family weekend pass to another mom in our Boulder parents Facebook group. They were sold out, and people were charging for them, but I was just happy to give them to someone who would use them with their family.
  • I checked a bag *shivers* to help Nick's roommate get some items from his family. They are unable to come to family weekend, but they live closeish to our house, and asked if we could transport a few items for their son. My bag was very full (leaving for London from Boulder), so I didn't have room in my bag for extras, and we were already bringing Nick a variety of things. Not a problem, but it did involve one of my least favorite things - checking a bag. Nick's roommate was so awesome at bringing a bunch of his stuff on  the drive when school started, so we definitely wanted to return the favor. -Edited to add, this ended up being an extra fun experience, given the flight was cancelled right before takeoff, and we had to retrieve the bag & then recheck at SFO airport. ;-)
  • Gave away a ton of stuff on Buy Nothing, and was able to fill a couple of "In Search of" asks, which is always nice.
What about you? Any wins to share?

September Goals Check In

Let's just say that it wasn't my most productive month, with work trips to: Tokyo, London & San Diego, as well as family weekend in Boulder.

Financial:

  • Max 401k for the year - yes, done!
  • Check in on 529 contributions & max - I've figured out my account & have put in $1k, but can't figure out how to get the match. More to do here, I guess.
  • Meal plan & use up 3 freezer/pantry items - I used up buns & tater tots from the freezer, and pickles from the pantry
Family:
  • Enjoy family weekend with Nick - we had an amazing time, despite travel snafus
  • Start cleaning out the closet of "things" leftover when Nick moved out - yes, lots of good progress here.
  • Help Sam with the start of fall classes - yes, this is going really well, and he's enjoying school, work & the rock climbing gym he joined.
  • One date night with M - we've had several really lovely evenings with a glass of wine by the pool

Fitness - this is where things get really dicey & the wheels really fell off the bus!

  • Lose 2 lbs - definitely not. Gained another pound.
  • Get back to regular fitness check-ins - didn't happen this month
  • 15 & 15 - strength training & no S days - 6/15, & 4/15
  • Half marathon training plan - barely worked out, minimal running
  • Stay on track on trips (Boulder + London) - I felt sick & miserable leading up to Boulder, and worked 12-14 hour days in London, so definitely not on track
  • Average 12,000 steps/day. - Not only is my watch not lasting a full day on a charge, my steps have been sad. 10,280/day
Personal:
  • Get together with friends x2 - a dinner party and two hikes + got to see my BFF in Colorado
  • Finish planning November concert trip - largely done
  • Say yes to adventure & trying new things - plenty of September adventure. Tube riding, trains in Tokyo & London, etc. I've also been working hard at learning a few new things at work.
  • Continue to explore work/life balance - this was certainly not the month for that
  • Declutter 50 items - 29/50, most of which came from Nick's move out pile
  • Work on travel planning & budgets - no further plans made, or budgets reviewed

What about you? How did you do with our September Goals?

Monday, September 29, 2025

Menu Plan Monday

I'm late to the party, but definitely need a plan for the week.

  • Friday - I ate a really terrible burger & a salad at the Heathrow airport hotel on Friday night, "courtesy" of United. I splurged & ordered a glass of wine, which I most certainly will be expensing through work. No idea what M & Sam ate, although I'm guessing Sam ate at work.
  • Saturday - M was ready to make burgers (ha, he didn't know about my Friday dinner fiasco), but I wasn't hungry & my eating schedule was all off. Instead, we opted to drink a glass of wine by the pool & go to bed early. No dinner for me.
  • Sunday - the burgers were back for round 2, and M grilled them & we made them with tater tots, lingering in the freezer from an event with Nick's friends.
  • Monday - taco salads (taco meat from the freezer
  • Tuesday - leftover burgers
  • Wednesday - leftover taco salads
  • Thursday - grilled chicken salad
  • Friday - I may be getting together with my old boss for drinks at her place. If not, I'll keep it very easy, and likely make some gyozas from the freezer.
What about you? What's on your menu plan this week? Would love a few good fall recipe ideas!

Travel woes

It was not my week for efficient travel, I can tell you that much!

I'm back from my journeys, and very, very jet lagged this morning. A quick recap:

Our Friday flight to Denver was cancelled right before boarding. That led to so much chaos, picking up our checked bag (Nick's ski boots), getting a hold of United, getting the car out of parking, driving to SFO in the middle of Friday afternoon traffic, and flying into Denver at 12:30 am, instead of the 7 pm expected. Of course, I called Avis & let them know about our delay & they "added a note to our file" & promised to hold our car for us. Spoiler, they overbooked by over 100 cars, so when we got to the Avis counter at 1 am, they had no cars. We were told we could rent a 12 passenger van. Folks.... that is an absolutely huge vehicle. M did an admirable job driving it to my friend's house. Luckily, we weren't staying in the city, and my friend let us borrow her car for game day & Boulder on Saturday.

Intermission to the traveling woes. We had an incredible (but short) trip with Nick in Boulder. So, so much fun meeting his friends, spoiling him a bit, taking everyone to lunch, attending a frat party (I smelled like beer afterward), getting him some skis for the winter, meeting the roommate, stocking them up on drinks & snacks (not beer, just sparkling waters & protein drinks). ;-) We also attended the big football game, and had an absolutely wonderful weekend. It more than made up for the fact that we got no sleep on Friday. Miss that kid.

On Sunday, M, my BFF & I went for a walk while the teens slept in. Then we left reasonably early, got the skis, took Nick, another friend & a roommate for lunch. It's so fun chatting with teens. They are so innocent & lovely & energetic & such good kids. M & I returned the rental car, which, as you can guess, was a total fiasco on Sunday, because they had sold out of literally every car that weekend, and most people were returning on Sunday.

My flight to London was pretty uneventful. But, I landed, headed to my hotel & immediately had to get on calls & work until 7 pm. Do not recommend. My body doesn't like jet lag. The work week was okay. Nice to spend time with everyone, but always difficult to juggle the actual work with the meet & greets, social events, & the sessions we were attending.

On the flight from London to SFO, we were advised to get to the airport early due to the cyber threats, outages, etc. So, we left London at 12 pm, as another coworker & I both had flights leaving around 4 pm on Friday. Stopped by the lounge, had lunch at the airport, and then boarded the plane. An international flight boards about an hour early, so we were all on board ~3 pm. Pilot comes on at expected departure time to announce that there is a problem with a fire detection system, and they would need to have the mechanics fix it. Four+ hours of sitting on the tarmac on a very warm plane (they couldn't use the auxiliary power to keep the plane cool) & the crew timed out & the flight was cancelled. Now, i'm stuck at Heathrow on a Friday night, with no way to get home.

Folks, you also have to exit the aircraft (people were freaking out, so this took longer than normal) & go through CUSTOMS again. I get why it's required, but I was so frustrated by that point. That took another 90 minutes.

Because I was in business class, I was "lucky" in that I got a reservation at a hotel at the airport. Took another ~60 minutes to get from customs through the airport, multiple train rides & then standing in line at the hotel for my reservation. Got on the phone with United when I could finally check into my hotel room, as my phone was dead & I needed a charger. It was nearly 10 pm by that point. When I got a hold of the very nice individual at United, and he mentioned that the following day at 12:15 was the soonest available, and there would be only an economy middle seat, I'm embarrassed to admit that I cried. Not with him. I was really nice, did not have a melt down on this guy, booked the flight, & carried on. But friends, I have all of the hormones coursing through me right now (have to assume I'm going through/about to go through menopause), it was a VERY long work week, with 12-14 hour days, some challenging people conversations, and all I wanted to do was get home. I'm not a princess, but my company books business class, & it was very frustrating that for my $10k flight, I was stuck in a middle seat in economy for almost 14 hour yesterday. I try to drink a lot of water on flights, and get up a lot to go the bathroom & stretch my legs. As you can imagine, that is not super conducive to a middle seat in economy, vs a full bed recline in business class. My body is so, so jacked from that experience. One of my rules as I approach 50 & have lupus & feel all of the aches & pains is that I will only fly business class for work international flights. Luckily, that aligns with my company policy for folks at my level. If I'm expected to roll off of a full day of traveling & be productive...

Anyway, I really needed the weekend to recover, but definitely going to have an abbreviated version of that now. M picked me up yesterday (landed around 5 pm, local time). I came home & put a few things away, then we sat outside & drank a glass of wine & chatted, I got to give Sam a hug before he went to work, and then I showered & went to bed.

Today is going to be rough! But, the week ahead is going to be very difficult. I have some tricky people stuff, and a huge project due on 10/10 that I'm really struggling with figuring out how to approach. Anyway, on to today. Here's what I need to get done:

  • Work out. Going to the 9:30 workout class. I missed my team triathlon yesterday, as I was stuck in London. Another thing that frustrated me. I haven't worked out (other than walking to & from the office) in a week, so it's going to be a rough go for me.
  • Laundry
  • Finish unpacking
  • Menu plan
  • Schedule for the week
  • Maybe carve out an hour to work on my 10/10 project. Emotionally, not sure I'll get to that.
  • See if I can squeeze in a massage at the very functional place near me. My back is seriously messed up after yesterday's flight & super long day.
  • Call Nick
  • Call a friend who left me a few messages when I was in London
  • Provide a job reference for an old coworker
I suppose on the frugal front, I'm going to receive a lot of United credits & travel vouchers? So far, here's what's happened on that side. Also, I'm just going to say that I would ALWAYS prefer a smooth travel experience, but here's where I'm at so far:
  • $150 travel voucher (from Denver flight cancellation)
  • 10,000 United miles (Denver cancellation, the "reimbursement" for having to pay for parking in SFO, after our flight was changed to that & we had already paid for parking at San Jose. We had to provide a receipt for this).
  • A $15 food voucher, which I put on my Starbucks card, to avoid waste.
  • We had paid to change our flights to leave much earlier on Friday, as we wanted to avoid the airport scramble on Family Weekend, and get more time with Nick & avoid being tired ahead of my international travels. I asked United to refund us for that change, as we obviously left even later than our original flights. They agreed, so we received a total of $635.98 back in a credit card refund.
  • A $650 travel voucher (from London flight cancellation)
  • I'll be getting back a check (?) I think as part of the UK travel laws, for around $700
  • I assume my company will get a refund for the drop in service from business class to economy middle class. But, not sure how that all works out. Given I'm the one who got to "enjoy" the great reduction in service, I'd love the reimbursement as a future flight credit, but I'm guessing that's not how that works.
On a positive note, I did get to do my first London "touristy" thing last week! We had a team event & got to go on the London Eye. It was very fun and nice to see the city from that view. It was also a super gorgeous evening, & there was champagne! ;-)

I'm hoping that you have all had much better weeks than me!

Frugal Friday

Another wild week on the books, with a one night trip to San Diego, soooo many early meetings, and leaving for Boulder today. Then London on Sunday. I've got this. Last international work trip of the year!

Saving on things we buy

  • I met up with my original 9:30 am workout class group of women for dinner one night last week. I can no longer go to that class, but we try to meet up for the occasional coffee or weekend workout. One of the women is heading to the east coast for three months, so we got together to see her off. I once again had a credit card offer for the restaurant we went to. I forgot about it by the time we were there (saved several weeks earlier), but received a $5.72 cash back credit.

Earning money

  • Regular W2 income, so nothing too exciting.
Avoiding spending

  • Eh, not confident we've done really well at this, and in fact I ordered delivery the night I got home from San Diego. I did use a BOGO coupon, a free delivery offer & a $10 credit, but it still wasn't the same price as eating what we have at home.

Eating what we have

  • For dinner last Friday, M & I weren't hungry for much, and instead hung out on the patio by the pool enjoying a bottle of wine & the last of the summer sunshine. It was a gorgeous evening. For dinner, I baked up a tray of prepped Costco samosas, which were easy & delicious, & served that with a salad.
  • I seriously thought of picking up lunch on Monday, on my way back from my workout, as we didn't have any easy protein options to go with my salad. Instead, I came home & made a perfectly serviceable salad with almonds (protein), had a small amount of cheese & crackers & fresh berries. It was "free" (already paid for) & reduces the potential for food waste.
  • I made a broccoli beef dish to use up some extra broccoli about to go bad.
  • Similarly, I prepped the slow cooker on Monday am, putting everything in for chicken & dumplings, and just pressed "slow", which made it really easy to get dinner together. It also meant that i have both dinner leftovers, as well as lunch options available in the freezer. Two birds, one stone & all that.
  • I did manage to turn the delivery into two dinners and two lunches, so I'll take it.

For others

  • Can't think of anything this week.
What about you? Any wins to share?

Fitness (or not) Monday

It's been awhile since I've posted a fitness recap. That's a good sign that I've been: overwhelmed & stressed, and not focused on my fitness. The travel + jet lag have been a terrible combination. For me personally, getting enough sleep is the cornerstone to having enough energy to work out. Working out also gives me a lot of energy, so it's a really terrible spiral when I don't work out. I got a flu shot last week, which also led to me skipping yet another workout.

Anyway, that's the quick catch up of why I'm behind on these posts. Last week was very "meh". Better than a few previous weeks, but way off the standard that I like, and how I was able to manage my schedule when I wasn't working. Go figure. ;-)

Weight: I've gained 3 lbs in the last six weeks, and while I'm not 100% sure that's accurate (weight is often a bit higher on Mondays, thanks to more weekend splurges), I am not surprised to see that my weight is up a bit. It's disappointing, but definitely unsurprising, as I have not been working out at my regular rate, ate very different food that are not on my plan, and not nearly enough sleep.

Calories: I'm estimating this at 1500/day, although honestly I didn't do a great job of tracking. I'm back on with my calorie tracking this week.

Steps: in a similar story, my watch hasn't been charging well (can you tell that it's all of the things, this week?), so I'd say this is off by at least 10%, but I'd rather have some benchmark than none. My steps were 8,764/day, which is well off my rolling average & target of 12k/day.

Workouts:

  • Two 60 minute workout classes
  • A 2 mile walk
  • A 7 mile hike
  • A 20 minute elliptical workout

On to this week! I have a one night trip to San Diego that's going to be a real challenge to squeeze a workout in/around, given my flight leaves at 6 am, and I have meetings all day + dinner with my boss. We shall see where I net out. I'm also heading to Boulder on Friday, and fly from Boulder/Denver to London on Sunday.

My goals for the week:
  • Increase steps back to my standard
  • 6 workouts (2 runs + at least 2 workout classes)
  • Drop the calories down a bit

What about you? How are you doing with your health & fitness goals?

Menu Plan Sunday

It's another busy week, so throwing together a menu plan always helps.

  • Friday - M & I weren't very hungry, so I baked up a tray of the Costco prepped samosas, and we had that with a salad.
  • Saturday - Dinner at a friend's house
  • Sunday - garlic noodles with beef and broccoli
  • Monday - slow cooker chicken & dumplings (me) & M will have salmon (freezer), as he's not much of a soup fan. I know, I don't understand it either ;-)
  • Tuesday - leftover garlic noodles with beef & broccoli
  • Wednesday - taco salads (prepped meat from the freezer)
  • Thursday - any remaining leftovers
  • Friday - we are flying to Boulder to see Nick for family weekend, so likely something at my friend's house, once we land.
What about you? Any new recipes to share? Are you transitioning over to more fall recipes? What are your favorites? Would love any slow cooker favorites!

Saturday Happenings

It's been a very full week! I had a late night call on Thursday with Tokyo + London (hence the need for the call until 11 pm) & then early starts (6 am) all week. My body was feeling the drag, especially with the post travel jet lag, getting a flu shot & having some minor responses to that, etc.

I got so much done yesterday, and felt like I really turned the corner with a three month work project. HURRAH! I should have a draft to share with my boss next week, when I make a one night trip to San Diego to meet up with her. The only real downside is that might flight leaves at 6 am, so I can make it to my first meeting at 9:30. Wish me luck! I fly back the next day, so it's very much an in & out trip.

Things for today:

  • A short run
  • Menu plan
  • Grocery list
  • M will go to Costco, and I'll go to the local store for a few smaller items we need (and, oat milk, as Costco doesn't carry it, AFAIK)
  • Meet up with a friend for a hike & chat, as we haven't been able to catch up for months due to various schedule challenges
  • Pick up a cake from the bakery
  • Maybe get a pedicure? Will depend on timing. My toes are in rough shape from running
  • Laundry
  • M & I are having dinner at a friend's house

Time permitting, I would love to get another two hours done on my project, but not sure how realistic that is. We shall see how productive I am!

What about you? What are you up to today?

Frugal Friday

It was a busy week, with all of the jet lag & a pile of work that seemed to just multiply over night. As is the trouble with work travel, my standard work (e.g. not the whole meeting each other, spending time understanding what the local team is up to) just piles up in my absence. So even though I'm absolutely working on trips, it's not the same type of work, which means unfortunately a lot to catch up on.

Saving on things we buy

  • I go through my credit card bonus reward offers each month, and save them to my card. I use the offers infrequently, and only when it's part of a regularly planned purchase, but sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised when an offer comes through. This week I received three: a Southwest reward of $15.62 & a $6.92 reward from Seat Geek (where I allowed Nick to purchase football game tickets), and Google Play (a Spotify subscription, which was a gift to Nick) for $1.19. The money gets credited back to your account as a payment, so it works great. I also used a Southwest credit for part of a flight. The tickets are for my flight to Las Vegas.
  • I uploaded all of our receipts to Fetch, and one receipt (CVS, for my prescription) to iBotta. I rarely use iBotta for anything but CVS, but they have a recurring cash back offer that is super helpful. Saved $.22 on my prescription.

Earning money

  • My paycheck felt very hard-earned with the travel last week!

Avoiding spending

  • Promptly returned clothes that I purchased & didn't need for my work trip, which saved some money. To be clear, I kept the items I did need, so this was just the stuff that I wasn't going to use.
  • About half of the order I'd placed for work clothes didn't arrive on time, despite paying for expedited shipping. I used the customer chat function and asked for a partial refund. They credited me back for the entire amount of shipping, which was helpful.

Eating what we have

  • On the Uber ride back home from my flight, I'd sent a Door Dash lunch to myself at home. We arrived at the house at the same time. However, Sam hadn't answered the phone when I called to see if he wanted me to add anything to the order for him. He was sick, but also very hungry, so he ate 90% of the chicken salad I ordered. You might be asking how this relates to eating what we have, but the good news is that I was hungry enough not to care, so I ate microwave popcorn and an apple & called it a day. (The lunch was purchased using monthly credit card rewards for Door Dash, plus a gift card.)
  • M made me a gorgeous breakfast using a lot of odds & ends in the fridge, when I woke up like a bear from hibernation on Saturday morning. Given how much I slept, that analogy felt right. The last of the bagels & eggs, some leftover melon & part of a pear.
  • Used two packages of Boursin cheese, well past their "best by" date. We ended up making this pasta/chicken dish, as Sam asked me to make enough for leftovers for him to eat when he got home late from work. The base of the recipe was okay, but it needs a couple of tweaks, IMO: add broccoli or another veggie at the very end, to steam. And, I think it needs a bit more spice.

For others

  • I used an Alaska gift card (purchased on sale at Costco at Christmas time) to buy my sister's flight to Las Vegas, as her birthday gift.
  • Two neighbors randomly reached out on Saturday to ask if we could pick up packages off of their porch & keep them in our garage until they are back in town, so we did that over the weekend.
