For whatever reason, I'm a little emotional today, as it's the last day of 10th & 11th grade. Next year, Sam will be a senior! It's such a milestone, we've been thinking about it forever, and known it was coming, but.... it's here!
Work is absolutely crazy, with calls starting at 8, and wrapping up at 6, and I slept through my workout. So, I've left the boys $20, with a promise that they would take the traditional last day of school pictures for me. Pretty convinced my bribe will work!
Nick flies out tomorrow, and Sam starts his job on Monday, so things are already moving quickly.
Tomorrow I have a kids' h.s. graduation, and that's the last of my k - 12 years. Yes, it's a bit emotional, but I don't let them see it. I'd hate for them to think they have to stick around for my benefit. It's hard enough to get them out the door as it is. In fact, they're all still here, dammit! For some reason, they aren't chomping at the bit to venture out, even if it was just to a dorm, as I was at that age. I don't understand, but I'm not all the people in the world, am I?
ReplyDeleteI grew up in a town of 2500, where most people worked in mills or the forest (loggers) & my parents did not have much money. I knew at 13 I didn't want to do that, so college was not only a requirement, but it got me out of a town I knew wasn't for me/didn't want to live in. The push was very real! For my kids, they live in a lovely area, and they both do seem very excited about college, but it's not a "get out of town, start my life" sort of thing I was feeling at that age.

The time goes way too fast and they are close together and then an empty nest which you will hate at first and then learn to love. Trust me on this.

DeleteIt's an exciting, but overwhelming stage of parenting when that first hits the last year. You're such a good mom, and no doubt, the boys know how much you're there for them as they figure out what's after highschool.
ReplyDeleteWe went to dinner last night to celebrate Sam becoming a senior. We had such a lovely & fantastic meal & conversation. We need to do this more regularly, and enjoy our time together.
