I hope I won't need an entire decade, but turning 50 has got me thinking about what I want to check off of my bucket list. I have a BUNCH of travel destinations & a few other things in mind. Mostly, I feel so incredibly grateful for everything in my life, and I want to keep pushing myself, trying new things, helping other people & just experiencing life.
This is not at all complete, as I'm actively soliciting input, so please share what's on your bucket list! And, in no particular order.
- Take an art class
- Improve at Spanish
- Another family trip to see M's mom (and, sister, cousins, etc.)
- Another trip to Hawaii with my parents
- Make an anonymous & very meaningful donation to someone in my community who needs it. (I have nothing in mind for this, but something in this general arena of giving. May ask a friend who is very connected in the community for suggestions.)
- Get to know our neighbors more.
- Invite our elderly neighbor for dinner
- Make plans with our neighbors behind us who have a son at Boulder as well
- Go for a walk or hike with our neighbor across the way
- Learn the name of the neighbors & I occasionally chat with. (Embarrassing, but true!)
- Travel bucket list:
- Hiking trip to New Zealand
- Italy with M
- Greece girls trip
- Take M to Japan
- Hike the Camino de Santiago
- Iceland
- Patagonia
- Maldives
- 10+ national parks
- Spain/Portugal
- Banff/Lake Louise
- Alaska
- Ireland
- Scotland
- Lots of additional hiking trips
- Get comfortable with entertaining
- Create a scholarship at the high school the boys attended
- Figure out my "next act", after my current job
- Master a complex cooking technique or at least 5 difficult recipes
- Create at least 5 meaningful surprises for other people
- Volunteer at a local school
- Learn a new hobby with M
- Offer to have a networking chat with 5 new grads
Hit me with ideas! Very interested in hearing from you on what you would put on a bucket list, or wish you had done at a different time in your life.
I have done 5 of those travel trips you want to take. I am not too sure what I would put on a bucket list as I am always changing my mind. Perhaps one would be that when this house gets too much for us we can find a place in the city our youngest lives in. That would put us 2 hours closer to our oldest as well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I would love to hear more about your past travels, Jackie, if you ever feel like blogging about it! And, I think that's a great goal for your house. - HP
DeleteVery motivating.Of course I'm a decade older than you, so many bucket list things will likely not happen. Here's a few:
ReplyDeleteLife Skills
*Relearn French
*Master a decently producing vegetable garden
*Truly minimalist my house, top to bottom refresh
Travel
*Immediate family trip internationally
*Norway and meet more extended family
*Scotland including an island stay
*Australia and New Zealand
*Regular snowbird trip Jan- March
*Complete all 50 states ( and I'll count airports or train stations)
There's many more places I'd like to go, but want some reality to my list.
Also love this list, Sam! I am excited about the national parks one on my side. I need to make a list of which I've been to before. Love the idea of a minimalist house as well - bringing DH along would be a challenge on my side. - HP
DeleteOh oh oh, so exciting!! Can't wait to read about your adventures.
ReplyDeleteI only recently read about the Camino de Santiago; wouldn't that be an amazing life changing walk.
I'm hoping that we can visit more of the national parks next year and do a cross country train trip. But we will probably have to wait for retirement.
Kathy
I'm with you on the national parks. Very high on my list as well. M wants to do the Maldives for his 60th, so we will likely plan that. Finding the time to do all of this (and of course, the $$) is the real trick! ;-) - HP
DeleteVery interesting topic. I’ll have to think on this subject. I love the meaningful things in peoples lives. I’ve done at least one of those that I can immediately recall and it meant a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteThat is so fantastic, Belinda. Well done. I know there are some people for which some help at just the right moment in their lives would make all of the difference. Just need to find those opportunities. - HP
DeleteI am afraid to make one.
ReplyDeleteFantastic list you have! I want to start a dog and/ or cat nonprofit rescue on the farm, have a large garden on the farm, fully fund all grandkids 529’s to a certain amount. Visit all U.S. states, also Canada and Mexico, several Caribbean counties, visit Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, visit all U.S national parks. I need to learn to speak French (oldest granddaughter is fluent), and I would like to learn at least conversational Spanish. I would also like to improve my piano skills, and learn to quilt. Cindy in the South.
ReplyDeleteThe Camino is on my list too!!! There is a new Camino in Canada in PEI. It’s just getting going but it’s 500 miles too.
ReplyDeleteI saved this for a month but never got around to commenting. We are both retired (well, I am finally at 95 per cent retired-I started scaling back at work in 2020). Here is my list:
ReplyDelete1. Visiting Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Indonesia. On tap for 2026!
2. Go to all 50 states. My criteria- we have to stop and eat a meal there at least. We’ve been to 40 so far.
3. Visit South Africa and go to Cape-town wine country and a safari lodge.
4. Redo the portion of a cruise that we missed due to husband’ illness on board and hospitalization in Thailand. This would involve a repeat visit to Singapore and Hong Kong (which we got to see last time and loved), with stops in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam on the cruise.
5. Revisit my beloved Japan and spend time with our family friends in the Kyoto area and their son (who I refer to as my Japanese son) in Tokyo. Bring a separate bag for goodies from Muji and Tokyo Hands.
6. Revist my beloved Paris (hopefully more than once).
7. Watch games at all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. Have done 23 so far.
8. Visit Prague, Vienna, Krakow and other parts of Eastern Europe.
9. Go on a river cruise.
10. Go on one or more trips with my kids and their families.
Non-travel:
1. Continue daily exercise and daily walks. I did not really start until I retired. Happy to be on a 30 day Peleton streak right now.
2.Decide whether or not I want to start a blog. I am quite late to the party with this one.
3. Like SAM, relearn French.
4.Balance outside activities and time with husband, family and friends. Also incorporate more down time. I never imagined that I would be this busy in retirement!
