Frugal Friday

It's a pretty short list this week, as I've not been feeling well, & have that cough/cold/congestion thing that is going around.

Saving on things we buy

  • Nick has been sick, so I stopped by CVS & used my monthly ExtraCare reward to pick up a few things for him. I spent just under $10 after the discounts, and earned another $4 back between iBotta & Fetch.

Earning money

  • Earned $25 from a user study, and cashed out $20 from the survey site I use.
  • Helped Nick sell an item on eBay. He made $185, and is saving up for his senior trip. (He wants to do a road trip to various national parks.)

Avoiding spending

  • Booked Sam's flight home for spring break & used a credit for the flight home (earned when I drove him to Sacramento at the end of winter break, and he caught a ride with his roommate). For the flight home, M used his Southwest points. The flight would have otherwise been $850!! We are very limited on time of day options, as he has finals, and then needs to coordinate around a shuttle that gets him from college to the airport. I've never seen flights to/from Portland that expensive. So glad that M had points.

Eating what we have

  • Made a delicious chicken satay dinner, which had the bonus of using up two of my January pantry challenge items (one can of coconut milk, the rest of a jar of red curry in the fridge & I started on the giant tub of red curry that was previously in the pantry). I also used some very wilty spinach in the recipe.

For others

  • Donated money to the fires
What about you? Any wins to share?

  1. My list was short this week too. I hope Nick is feeling better. Wonderful eBay sale for him. Good that M had points to save money on his flight.

    1. Nick was very pleased & he did none of the work, so it was quite a win. ;-) I was home sick anyway, and it was an easy sale. I did add extra insurance, because it would be just my luck to have this get lost in the mail, given the value. (HP)

  2. Hope you are better but heads up the NEW covid going around starts as like a cold or sinus infection. Two of the grandkids and one of our parents caught it

    1. I've tested once & no COVID, but probably worth testing again to be sure. Hope everyone is feeling better on your side! (HP)

  3. Flights are outrageously expensive these days. My flight to the Rocky Mountain states from Atlanta was almost $1500 nonstop round trip including travel insurance, and seat assignment, etc. Cindy in the South

    1. I also had to shorten my trip because of the impending historic winter storm that was rolling into the Southern states, so that flight change to a late afternoon return flight instead of a morning flight the next morning cost me over $200 extra to make the round trip flight over $1700 total…. Sigh. Cindy in the South

    2. Ouch! That is like an economy ticket to Europe! So sorry it was so pricey, Cindy. (HP)

  4. I have noticed for the past few years that costs for flights are crazy.
You did well on your frugal endeavors.

    God bless.

    1. If we're not tied to school dates, I can typically find reasonably priced flights (in fact, I'm playing the opposite route to visit Sam next week & paid around $300), but if you have very specific dates due to the college schedule, it's nuts! (HP)

    2. Have you considered Amtrak? Yes it takes awhile but it’s an adventure and does go through Portland ( and lay back and sleep in the chair through the night…)

  5. When I sold our bedroom set, I donated the money to a wildfire family. I let people know on marketplace that , that is where the proceeds would go and no one tried to talk me down. So $300 to a family to get their well up and running.
