Frugal Friday

Another wild week on the books, with a one night trip to San Diego, soooo many early meetings, and leaving for Boulder today. Then London on Sunday. I've got this. Last international work trip of the year!

Saving on things we buy

  • I met up with my original 9:30 am workout class group of women for dinner one night last week. I can no longer go to that class, but we try to meet up for the occasional coffee or weekend workout. One of the women is heading to the east coast for three months, so we got together to see her off. I once again had a credit card offer for the restaurant we went to. I forgot about it by the time we were there (saved several weeks earlier), but received a $5.72 cash back credit.

Earning money

  • Regular W2 income, so nothing too exciting.
Avoiding spending

  • Eh, not confident we've done really well at this, and in fact I ordered delivery the night I got home from San Diego. I did use a BOGO coupon, a free delivery offer & a $10 credit, but it still wasn't the same price as eating what we have at home.

Eating what we have

  • For dinner last Friday, M & I weren't hungry for much, and instead hung out on the patio by the pool enjoying a bottle of wine & the last of the summer sunshine. It was a gorgeous evening. For dinner, I baked up a tray of prepped Costco samosas, which were easy & delicious, & served that with a salad.
  • I seriously thought of picking up lunch on Monday, on my way back from my workout, as we didn't have any easy protein options to go with my salad. Instead, I came home & made a perfectly serviceable salad with almonds (protein), had a small amount of cheese & crackers & fresh berries. It was "free" (already paid for) & reduces the potential for food waste.
  • I made a broccoli beef dish to use up some extra broccoli about to go bad.
  • Similarly, I prepped the slow cooker on Monday am, putting everything in for chicken & dumplings, and just pressed "slow", which made it really easy to get dinner together. It also meant that i have both dinner leftovers, as well as lunch options available in the freezer. Two birds, one stone & all that.
  • I did manage to turn the delivery into two dinners and two lunches, so I'll take it.

For others

  • Can't think of anything this week.
What about you? Any wins to share?

  1. We are kindred spirits as I think the same way, rather than spend money out when I'm tired and out and about I think of what we have at home instead. Safe travels this week, you are one busy lady!

    1. It was not my week for travels, at all. So many snafus. But, I'm finally back. - HP

  2. Whenever I treat myself to lunch out, I try to order the dinner size entree so that I can stretch it for another lunch. I could never get Hubby on board with this plan, but I think its brilliant!

    1. I love this. I tend to do the 'extra protein' add on, which I then use to turn the meal into lots of additional meals, with salad added. this works really well for Greek takeout, where they give you extra gyro meat, which is absolutely delicious on a salad. - HP

  3. So much travel, I would love that but not if I had to work.

  4. I'm trying to be much better thinking through what's already at home particularly since I've changed shopping to be more loss leader buying and less shop for specific meals.

    1. I'm interested to see how my approach changes once my schedule settles down a bit. We are mostly empty nesters, as Sam works most evenings. M & I tend to be very easy going with dinners these days. - HP

  5. I am glad to read that this will be your last international work trip this year. It will give you time to rest up for the new year. My win for the week was a free oil change.

    God bless.

  6. That's so much travel on top of your travel earlier in previous weeks! Did you expect this much transit when you accepted this job? (And is that normal?)

I am even more impressed that you are able to keep up with any semblance of frugality with all the hectic travel, honestly. Maybe it's because my two are much younger, but I can't wrap my head around having the mental bandwidth left for these logistics on top of the demands of work. We did a reasonable mix of prepared foods at home this week but we did need to do takeout twice. The takeout is lasting more than a couple meals though, so that's helpful.

    1. I was told there will be around 4 trips/year for this job, which is pretty do-able for me, particularly as I'm allowed to fly business class for international travel. (That seriously helps the aches & pains & overall recovery for me. Now, if you see what happened on my flight yesterday - flight cancelled, rebooked into a middle economy seat - you see how quickly that can all fall apart). Two things that are driving the travel right now: me trying to onboard when my entire team is in London, and just the unlucky of the draw, by not knowing about travel & planning when I joined, and needing to get a bunch of intros & things done quickly.

I will say that my boss travels a lot, and I've been clear with myself & M that it's not in scope for me to travel that much. I will start saying no, as I am ramping into my job.

We could have never done these new jobs if we had young kids at home. Absolutely not. So, it is much different to not be worrying about schedules & carpools, & packed lunches & homework, etc. - HP
