Yard work progress

I wish I'd thought to take photos of all of the yard projects I have going, but I did take a few before/afters. I'm not quite done with this area, but it's already starting to look so much better. This is probably the smallest area I'm working in.

After:

Don't mind the irrigation system - need to get that cleaned up as well. Strawberries have made their way into this area, and we're hoping that by removing all of the overgrown plants, we can get a nice strawberry patch going, next to the tall rose bush. There are some sort of wild lily, and the fruit tree of unknown origin that produces a very small amount of citrus fruit. Some sort of lemon/grapefruit hybrid, I think.

Here's a picture of the small ivy removal project I'm working on (the other side is about 10x this size), unfortunately.

And, not the best picture of the big ivy project, as I took this while I was trimming the enormous tree, but you can see the ivy in the background:

This is definitely how I'm staying busy during the quarantine! What about you? Do you have any big projects (yard related, or not) that you are trying to accomplish?

  1. with your hours, and younger children, how you are getting so much done is amazing. Well done.

    1. The quarantine makes me anxious, so I'm channeling that feeling into working outside. :-)

  2. That is a lot of work my friend. But look at the great exercise.

  3. Wow, you have done a lot of chopping! A growing project would likely be fun for your boys and who doesn't like strawberries

    1. So much cutting, trimming, raking, and loading yard waste bins. So much!

  4. I am struggling to keep the four boxes watered in the back yard.

    1. The watering is where we take advantage of child labor :-)

  5. Our entire yard is overgrown with weeds again, and after all the work we did last year to clear it! We failed to do the necessary follow-up of putting in anything to prevent them from coming back. I'm sorely tempted to figure out the cost of concrete and figure out how to pour it ourselves but I guarantee there's no way that PiC would be satisfied with the quality of our work in scraping it straight. But still. Tempted. I'd rather build big planter boxes where I can garden than have to fight these weeds every season for time neverending. It's back breaking work and it's only going to get worse as we age!

    1. We caved in & are hiring it out. We met with a yard person today. I've been doing all of the big projects, to reduce the cost of the one time clean up. We are hoping to make the yard less high maintenance over time. We are paying quite a bit for a one time job, and having all of the bushes, trees & shrubs trimmed, plus new plastic under a fresh load of bark dust. Then paying for the monthly service. This yard is just WAY too high maintenance for us. Like you, I want something easier to maintain. We'll get there, but for now, this is a really useful option.
