Frugal Friday

I shared in a separate post, but by far the biggest frugal "win" was paying off half of our mortgage! Woohoo for progress!

It's been another busy week, with plenty of activities & Sam's school soccer games & practices. Here's what we've been up to lately.

Saving on things we buy

  • I used a Target gift card to buy snacks & other items we needed. I used $.72 of Target circle rewards. I also earned 1800 points on Fetch, and saved $10.45 via iBotta
  • Used a promo code to save 10% off of a purchase

Earning money

  • I sold a few things on eBay.
    • A duffel bag we've never used
    • A boxed set of young adult books
    • Another book from the freebie pile
    • A pair of shorts
    • A sample from a Birchbox
  • Earned enough points to redeem a $5 gift card via Fetch

Avoiding spending

  • Sam wanted to eat out after a late practice, so I decided it was the right time to use a Chipotle gift card I've been carrying around for well over a year. Dinner sorted (plus leftovers for me, not the teen, however) & he was thrilled. We don't eat out too much, which makes it a special treat when it happens.

Eating what we have

  • M grilled chicken this week, and we enjoyed it for leftovers
  • I also used a bunch of leftover Blue Apron ingredients in other ways, to make things stretch a bit further (kale, potatoes, bok choy, etc)

For others

  • I'm still volunteering daily, but my smaller "think of others" top of mind has slipped a bit, & I'd like to get back to that & will try to get creative this weekend.
What about you? What wins have you had for the week?

  1. Congratulations on the mortgage! That is fabulous, especially since you live in a VHCOL area! Cindy in the South

  2. Sounds like another great week! Congrats again on getting the mortgage down to half. The only spending here was $36 to restock on some fresh fruits and veggies this week, and saved $300 on doing all the tree trimming and spring yard clean up ourselves. Here's to another winning week!

  3. Nice wins. I have a mess of coffee cards to tap into when my daughter is home, and she has some Target cards, plus I have Kohl's cash that needs to be used by 3/31 so we'll use them all for a little shop and coffee time. I love using a gift card when doing something fun with others-like a double gift.

  4. Well I over made the corn beef and cabbage, so we had it for the third night, Hubs told me not to make so much next time. I think he was sick of cabbage.

    1. Ha! We definitely have those meals here, where somehow, we just end up with so much, it feels like we're eating it forever.

  5. No shopping here has occurred, so all I can think of is that I'm continuing to split succulents in my ongoing efforts to create a very low maintenance yard. Four years without a gardener so far represents enough in savings to have paid for half the cost of the faux grass we put down, so if I can keep it up for another few years it will have paid for itself!

    1. I've been pushing my husband to consider faux grass, so thanks for the reminder! I love that you're looking at the cost over the long time horizon.

  6. You had a nice week, and using the gift card to treat your son to a meal is a great idea.

    1. It worked out really well, treating him on a day I was feeling particularly low energy.
